The terms, in plain language.
These are the working terms of the Student Success Program. We’ve written them the way we’d explain them across a table, because that’s how we intend them. If anything here is unclear, ask us before you apply: [email protected].
What the program is
The Student Success Program pairs small businesses, nonprofits, and churches in Kanawha and surrounding counties with students in COSC-360 · Web Application Development at the University of Charleston. The student designs and builds a website for you as graded coursework during the Fall 2026 semester. The build is free. IoTemy Labs coordinates the program, mentors the students, and hosts this application page as a community service.
Scope of the work
Your student builds a website: pages, design, content structure, and the features agreed on at kickoff. Out of scope are projects that require paid third-party software licenses, migrations of existing e-commerce stores between platforms, and anything that can’t reasonably fit in one semester. Scope is settled between you, your student, and the course mentors in the first weeks — and once settled, additions wait for after delivery.
What you receive, and who owns it
At the end of the semester you receive the website’s source files, the assets created for it, and written deployment instructions. Ownership of the delivered website and those materials transfers to you. You may host it anywhere, register a domain with any registrar, modify it, and hire anyone you choose to maintain or extend it. You receive these materials regardless of any other decision you make — including every decision about hosting or paid services.
No warranty, no guarantee of completion
This is student coursework, delivered as-is. There is no warranty of any kind — not of completeness, fitness for a particular purpose, or freedom from defects. There is no guarantee the project reaches completion: students occasionally withdraw from a course, and circumstances change on both sides. Whatever exists at the end of the semester is delivered to you. There is no ongoing support obligation after delivery in December 2026.
Your commitments
You agree to respond to your student within 2–3 business days, to meet roughly every two weeks during the semester, to designate one person with final decision-making authority, and to supply (or work with your student to create) your logo, photos, and text. A client who stops responding can be removed from the program so the student can be reassigned — their grade can’t wait on an unanswered inbox.
Student portfolio rights
Your student keeps the right to show the work they did — in their portfolio, in job applications, and in course materials. This means screenshots, links, and a description of the project. It does not give the student or the university any ownership of your business’s name, logo, or content.
Three separate things
The program deliberately separates three offerings. They are never bundled, and the first never depends on the other two.
First: the website design and build. Free, performed by UC students as coursework. You receive source files, assets, and deployment instructions, and you may host anywhere, register a domain with any registrar, and hire anyone to maintain the site.
Second: hosting, management, and domain registration. Optional, offered by IoTemy Labs to program participants at a discounted rate. “Management” is defined precisely as software and plugin updates, regular backups, and uptime monitoring. Content changes and new features are quoted separately. Actual rates are quoted individually after the semester.
Third: ongoing design or development work by IoTemy Labs. A separate paid service at standard rates. It is not part of the program.
This is entirely optional and has no bearing on selection, on your student’s work, or on what you receive at the end of the semester.
Optional data analysis
Some applicants share business data — sales, customer, or operational records — that students in data-analysis coursework may study. This is entirely optional, separate from the website build, and has no effect on selection. Any data you share is used for coursework only.
